Why Have a Tutor?

If you've been debating the merits of hiring a tutor for your struggling student, here are the TOP SIX reasons to do so. If your student could benefit from one or more of these reasons, consider hiring a tutor today.

1) Tutors are process experts. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. A tutor doesn't just help a student get the correct answer; a tutor shows the student how to apply problem-solving skills to get the answer by themselves in the future.

2) 90 percent of communication is nonverbal. A tutor is able to focus on the student in a way that classroom teachers cannot. If a student is frustrated, they may be crossing their arms, slumping their shoulders or have a quizzical look on their face. A tutor working one-on-one will pick these signals of confusion up faster than a teacher working with 25 students in a classroom.

3) To save embarrassment. Rather than asking a friend or colleague for assistance, a tutor gives a student a resource in front of whom they don't have to be embarrassed. A student might be unwilling to ask a peer for help but asking a tutor for help doesn't carry the same stigma. An in-home tutor assures that know one other than the student, tutor and parent will even know about the student's relationship with the tutor.

4) It's a good investment. Competition for financial aid, grants and scholarships is fiercer than ever before. Additionally, college admissions have become increasingly competitive. Investing in your children's educational success today will pay dividends down the road by getting them into a better school, increasing their access to financial aid and by teaching them the process of learning that they can take with them to succeed on the collegiate level and beyond.

5) To maintain a positive relationship with your child. Many parents find that the constant nagging of their student to finish homework, study for tests and complete assignments has fractured their relationship, especially during the teenage years. Rather than serving as the homework police, many parents choose to hire a tutor to help their student maintain discipline with their studies.

6) Schools are not providing a good enough education for your student.  Its very sad to mention this but unfortunately it is true.  Even in an optimal setting, without behaviour management issues, with both the teacher and students turning up punctually and a full period with which to work this is still true:

  • Your student is ONE a class of 30 students who get approximately 3 hours (180 minutes) with each subject teacher a week.  Now, do the math:
    • 180 minutes / 30 students = 6 MINUTES FOR YOUR STUDENT PER WEEK
How difficult will it be for your student to reach their potential with such a limited amount of personal teacher attention?  Quite simply, the odds are stacked against your student, and this precious six minutes will be reduced still further as teachers spend time dealing with disruptive and poorly behaved students in the classroom.

What is On-Line Tutoring?

Many tutoring companies offer on-line tutoring nowadays and many of them are quite good.  On-line tutors generally use email to check on a student's progress on a set schedule - usually a weekly contact.  They offer feedback on set work that may have been requested by the school teacher or the tutor themselves.  While this reasonably effective method of helping a student, it certainly does not give the benefits that a "face to face" lesson provides to a student.

What is On-Line Video Tutoring?

On-Line Video tutoring, on the other hand, optimises the technological advantages of the internet, by actually offering video tutoring with the student.  This means that the student is able to sit 'face to face' with their tutor, for an arranged contact session - daily, weekly, or as negotiated - and receive thorough personal support in their difficulties, and affirmation and praise in their successes. Through free programs (such as Skype and Windows Messenger) and the use of a webcam, the tutor and the student talk face to face, and have the additional ability to type messages to each other.

Your student now has the best of both worlds!  Students have the personal support they need without leaving their own home, and without the pressure of an adult coming into their home, which is their personal space.  Students find that this system allows them the confidence to be fully engaged in the tutoring session.

TESTIMONIALS

Mr Brehaut was an amazing teacher.  He had the ability to make even the most boring subject interesting. The way he taught encouraged me to look at all perspectives and I found him to be one of the approachable and encouraging teachers I know.

Jodi - Yr 12 Student

From this day I can still remember the very first class I had with you. It was Year 9 English. You broke down all the barriers with the class by quoting that Smashmouth lyric, 'Somebody once told me the world was going to roll me' followed by asking everybody if they had ever felt like the world was against them and if they ever felt like they were fighting a losing battle.

I think from this point on you became one of the most liked teachers in the school not only for your fantastic teaching ability on any subject but for your general concern and care for all students no matter who they were.

I always admired the way you would challenge students to justify their opinions on any subject or even how they felt about anything in general as it is one thing to pass judgment on a topic, but being able to justify it is another (which as I have learned, is very important.)

If anyone is contemplating taking Andrew as a tutor, I would urge you to do so as I cannot think of anyone more fitting for such a position.

Michael - Year 9 Student

Mr Brehaut was a really good teacher. He always listened to any problems we might have had and helped us to find a solution to those problems. He would always go out of his way to make sure that we had an understanding of the subject he was teaching and he would also come to us in his free time to ensure that all our homework and assignments were handed in on time.

Emma  - Yr 11 Student

I really enjoyed Mr Brehaut's classes.  He had a great method of teaching which I thought was terrific.  He really did take a lot of interest in my work and my goals and that is something only a true teacher can do.

Jonathon - Year 8 Student

Mr Brehaut was a very inspirational teacher who not only assisted us with the many challenges that students face leading up to their senior years, but also became a role model. He practised what he preached and helped us grow as young adults and students.

He is definitely not your typical teacher who just speaks in front of a class; he gets all students involved with his teachings and interacts with them to find out their strengths and weaknesses in achieving all their academic goals and future aspirations.

Last, but not least, he brightened up our school and the minds of all his students. He made it clear to them that they were the future and that they were the key to unlocking their dreams.

Thanks for being a great teacher and supporter.

Best wishes,

Petula  - Year 9 Student

Mr Brehaut was an awesome teacher who always made his classes the best.  He always started off with little games to get your mind thinking.

A fantastic teacher!

Tayla - Year 8 Student

Mr Brehaut's class was one of the scarce few you could actually enjoy in high school, and he made the Year 11 & 12 curriculum fun and interesting - an achievement in itself.  Always available to help (and joke with) his students, Mr Brehaut was constantly encouraging.  He was, at all times, extremely professional, but took a personal interest in ensuring every student understood and reached their potential in his class.

Lorae - Year 12 Student
